I have researched for some time now on how to support 78xx SIP phones and the new 8831 Conference Phone on CME prior to the release of v11 in July of this year. I have run across numerous conflicting articles that state you can either support these phones using a "Fastrack" option, or that it simply won't work and we truly have to wait until July. I also see various posts by various people stating various levels of success using "Fastrack".
I have a 7841 and a 8831 phone. I have followed every article I can get my hands on for configuring the "Fastrack" with mixed and confusing results. Here is my config as it applies to these two phones:

When I first connected the 7841, it spent no less than eight hours attempting to register. Once it finally did register, I can reset it, restart it, unplug the Cat 5e cable and plug it back in, use the **#** sequence on it and it bounces right back and registers pretty darn quick. I just today, about eight hours ago, plugged in the 8831 and it's still spinning on trying to register.
Of more concern is the fact that the 7841 doesn't seem to support the softkey layout I have specified in my template. It also cannot access voicemail when I press the voice mail button (yes, I have a voice mail box configured for it on Unity Express) yet if I call the extension for the phone and let it ring, after 20 seconds that call will pass onto the Unity Express side and play the default VM message for that VM box.
I have configured somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 CME systems in the last 6 years. I think I have a pretty good handle on CME. To date all the phones I have configured are running SCCP, but I see the 'wave' of the future leaning to SIP and am trying to be ready to program SIP phones onto CME systems.
Any assistance in getting this to work will be greatly appreciated. Any rock solid, non-conflictory information on whether Fastrack is viable and should be used, or whether we should be practicing patience for CME 11 to come out will also be appreciated. With the lack of availability of the 7937 conference phones, I have many customers who are having to "make do" with a desk phone on speaker phone for the next few months as a conference room solution.
I read through the link and added some of the options it mentioned. Unfortunately, two of the commands referenced in that doc are actually not available in voice register pool-type <> command. Specifically, they are:
CME10.0(config)#voice register pool-type <> CME10.0(config-register-pooltype)#device-reference <one of the supported phone-type> CME10.0(config-register-pooltype)#GSM-Handoff
Instead of device-reference, it's reference-pooltype, and instead of GSM-Handoff, it's gsm-support. I'm not sure if those differences matter, but it's inconsistencies in documentation such as this that cause me to question the validity of the solution.
BTW, after adding some of the commands referenced in that link, I re-created the profile under voice register global, then reset the 7841. It's still not displaying the correct softkeys, and still cannot access voice mail. And the 8831 is going on about 18 hours stuck in a registration attempt.
