Comparing f.x loads to 1.x.x.x loads of 7925 firmware

For 7925 phone firmware loads, how to the f.2 and f.3 firmware loads compare to the 1.x.x.x loads.  What upgrade paths are supported?

I believe the "F" are factory installed codes.  When you get them, upgrade the phones to a minimum of 1.4(3) code for stability.

That was my understanding too.  I tried upgrading from the web browser and the phone says 'downloading firmware' but when it reaches 100%, it doesn't seem to actually install the software.  The phone upload status on the web browser page says 'Error in uploaded image'.
