The Gateway as any other device needs a way to get Calling Priviledges and you as the Administrator need to be able to restrict where should the gateway calls be able to get routed. It's common to give access only to Internal and VoiceMail Partitions, but not external route patterns. Since the Gateway doesn't need to send calls out to the PSTN again, since that would lead to possible toll fraud conditions

Hi,

We assign CSS to gateway so that it can call internal number which is in non defauly partition.

If internal number is in non default partition, and gateway does not have CSS configured the incoming call will fail.

Do we need gateway to call internal ?

Hi,

Gateways are used to call internal number from PSTN. For example if you PSTN cell phone wants to call your IP phone regesterd to your CUCM. you need Gateway regestered to the CUCM and the gateway CSS should have your internal IP phones partition in its CSS.

If you have no requirement of incoming calls from PSTN, you can ignore CSS of gateway.

ok thanks..

For outgoing calls these CSS use?

One more question

On gateway page, there is Incoming Calling Party Settings. Since i m using H323 gateway and i nvr use this setting. When i can use this setting

Hi

Calling Search Space is used for incoming calls only and Calling Search Space is not used for outgoing calls.

You can use it when you want to convery the called number ( when call is coming from PSTN to Inside ip phone )

The H.323 protocol does not support the international escape character  +. To ensure the correct prefixes, including the +, get applied to  inbound calls over H.323 gateways, configure the incoming called party  settings; that is, configuring the incoming called party settings  ensures that when an inbound call comes from a H.323 gateway, Cisco  Unified Communications Manager transforms the called party number back  to the value that was originally sent over the gateway.

Also you can add prefix to called number, you can remove some number from the called number.

Other details are in below link

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/admin/8_5_1/ccmcfg/b02devpl.html

It is very good feature for called number  manipulation.

How can you say that CSS is not used for outbound calls? If we are using non default CSS then every fone will have CSS in line setting. We have put appropriate CSS to that line

Hi,

You are talking about Line CSS of Phone or CSS in Gateway. Both have different significant.

Ip Phone line CSS will allow you to hit the route pattern which you creat which will used for out going calls. But in case of Gateway CSS, the CSS will be used for incoming calls.

Let us know if it is stil not clear.
