Discard digits when dialing from Corporate Directory

We have Call Manager synced up with active directory which includes users from 5 different area codes.  Everybody shows up in the corporate directory with their 10 digit number.  Is it possible to discard the area code when the user dials by selecting someone from the directory?  I'm aware that I can add the proper prefix in the route pattern to make the call work, but that can cause a call between 2 phones on the call manager to go out and hit the gateway to complete the call.  Obviously that is not a desired solution.
