DNS will invalidate software license

Hi

I'm with CUCM 7.1.3 on VM.

I want change the DNS, actually dont have DNS setting.

I'm use the demo license from CUCM installation

Did somebody see this message when we try dns settings?

admin:set network dns primary x.x.x.x

WARNING: Changing this setting will invalidate software license

on this server. The license will have to be re-hosted.

Continue (y/n)?

Regards

Peterson

If you are using the demo license in VMWare, I don't think that should be of consequence.  It is not "hosted" persay, it is a default license (.lic) file.  I haven't tested this in my lab, but would seem to make sense.

Re: DNS will invalidate software license

It was by designed.

If CUCM was installed on VMWare, the license was bound to "license MAC" instead of the NIC MAC.

A "License MAC" is a hash value of many system properties like NTP, DNS, domain name, Organzation, etc.  Changing either one of them will invalidate the license.

Sounds familiar?  Yes, that was the "Windows Activation" introduced by Microsoft years ago.  But IMHO, Cisco should exclude the frequently changed attributes (like DNS) from the hash.

Hi Michael.

Do you have any idea how I can get around this without disabling the CallManager?

Thanks

If you're using demo license (comes pre-installed with CUCM), you don't have to worry about it.  Because demo license was not bound to any MAC.

If you're using an actual license file (temporary or permanent), you'll have to get a new license file from Cisco.
