Doubt about partition in CUCM

Hi Guys,

I have the following doubts: In CUCM we have two partitions (Active and Inactive), wright? When I need put another patch, what file will subscribe? the first file or the most recent file? Is it possible remove the previous file?

When you are installing a patch the software installation is taking place on the inactive partition, and at the end when CUCM swap the partition it boots up into the active partition. The previous version is move to inactive partition, to which you can always go back in case you run into issues with the new software.

Hi Chris,

I understood in parts your explanation. For example: Suppost that I have in my CUCM the version A is more recently (active) and version B (inative). When install the new version (C) for example, the version B is subscribe? Is this? Another doubt is is possible keep only one version active (without another inactive)? Is possible remove the version that not is use?

When you install version C then whatever is in inactive partition gets over written. There can only be one active and one inactive version.

Hi Wilson,

Active and inactive partitions concept is used to help with roll back procedures.it also minimize the upgrade down time. the down time is calculated when you switch between the active and inactive partitions.

Regarding your example:

Pub: active partition: version A, inactive partition: version B

when you deploy version C, it overwrites version B.

for the subscriber you can't deploy version C until you have version C on the publisher (active on inactive partitions)

Hi Wilson,

In addition to explaination from Chris and ANas (+5)  , any changes made in Database of active partition A won't get copied onto inactive partition B .If u switch over from active to inactive, u won't see the changes in B which now becomes active.

Hello Wilsonsant,

Cisco Supports only two partitions, one ia ACTIVE, and second is INACTIVE, if you upload third patch then new patch will replaces the INACTIVE partition.
