E1 is down

Hi Guys,

I am configuring one e1 pri. I have given the configuration below. But it is showing down. Kindly help. I read that this error is due to wrong cable? I have used an straight ethernet cable.

Thanks in advance.

Controller DOWN indicates either carrier detect issue or physical connectivity issues. make sure cable is connected, carrier detect light is ON, if not try different cable, if no go check with service provider if they can loop onto the circuit.

Thank you Chris..

I tried using different ethernet cables. But still its the same. Further in a doc I read that the cable should be a cross over one. Is it true we need to use a cross over cable? I have given the link to the doc below. Else I may need to contact with the provider itself.

Thanks a lot..

Re: E1 is down

There is no reasons to check ISDN status when controller is down. On Cisco side first pair (1, 2) is RX and second (4, 5) is TX or vice versa. Search "E1 pinout" on cisco.com to find exact pinout for your model.

Re: E1 is down

typically you do not need crossover cable between the gateway and smart jack, but you can try. What lights do you see on the smart jack?

On the back side of the router on the e1/t1 card there is one amber color and yellow color led glowing.

Not sure if you already checked this, but ensure E1 pinouts are as follows

1 <-> 4

2 <-> 5

4 <-> 1

5 <-> 2

That is wrong.

It must be a straight T1 cable, with the pinout indicated in the documention.

However the most common cable, is circuit failure.

Please post output of

show isdn status

If Layer 1 is down or deactivate then the problem is physical (cable)

if Layer 2 is down then the problem could be combination of framing,linecode, you seem to have alot of linecode violations

Also verify the configs from the otherside

isdn switch-type protocol or timeslot issues

What we may need is a E1 cross-over not an Ethernet cross-over cable(E1 G703).

Remember that Ethernet cables pinout is 1,2,3,6 whereas E1 G703 pinout is 1,2,4,5

Maybe this may be of some assistance,

OK,

If you look at Layer 1 below you will see that its shutdown and deactivated. You might have a cable issue between telco switch and your e1 card follow the doc below as a guide for E1 cable type

Thanks again.

Here I have one doubt. I have configured e1 pri. and in the output of show isdn status, it is showing the status of BRI. Right? The router has a BRI card too. But I have not configured it.

I would call the pstn providers and check tat too.

to answer your question even though it is showing the status of the BRI interface the state is shutdown and the serial interface is the one you have configured. but you still have a cable issue on there interface becasue its deactivated.

so in this case you are working with the correct interface

mdxin-2901cmx#show isdn status

Global ISDN Switchtype = primary-net5

ISDN BRI0/0/0 interface

        dsl 0, interface ISDN Switchtype = basic-net3

    Layer 1 Status:

        SHUTDOWN

    Layer 2 Status:

        Layer 2 NOT Activated

    Layer 3 Status:

        0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)

    Active dsl 0 CCBs = 0

    The Free Channel Mask:  0x00000000

ISDN Serial0/1/0:15 interface

        dsl 1, interface ISDN Switchtype = primary-net5

    Layer 1 Status:

        DEACTIVATED

    Layer 2 Status:

        TEI = 0, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = TEI_ASSIGNED

    Layer 3 Status:

        0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)

    Active dsl 1 CCBs = 0

    The Free Channel Mask:  0x00000000

    Number of L2 Discards = 0, L2 Session ID = 0

    Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0
