Most of the gateways I have dealt with are for inbound and outbound calling. Have a situation of outbound dialing only. So I created a pots peer of destination-pattern 9.T. Didn't work, I finally had to add a voip peer pointing back to the callmanager with a destination-pattern. Trying to understand why that would be required...thx

You have to use a voip dial-peer for IP based targets.

Thats nost likely because you are running IOS 15.1 and above. There is a feature called Toll fraud prevention that will reject any call coming from a device that is not in the trust list of the gateway. When you configure a destination pattern with a session target ipv4, the ip address gets added automatically to the trust list of the gateway.. Refer to this doc for more details
