External Speakers for Ring Only.

CUCM 6.1.21

External Speakers for Ring Only

One of our guys in the Maintenance Department wants an External Amplified Ringer for their Cisco 7962 phones. They have 2 Cisco phones in a Mechanic’s Garage with a lot of noise from Air Tools and cannot hear the phone. The phones do flash red when ringing but they still want the external device.

I was hoping there would be something I could plug in to the phone, mount, and not have to use an ATA. In other words, I was looking for something that was a VoIP/Network Solution instead of digital to analog.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks, Tom

Re: External Speakers for Ring Only.

I looked for something similar a few years ago.  No dice.  I had to leverage a "stinger ringer" and an analog port (I used VG224 but ATA VG202, etc.) to accomodate the customer need. I understand this isn't what you are looking for.  Just giving you my field experience with this type of question. Hopefully, someone has found a solution which meets your specifications.  If they have, I am sure it would be something that involves using a shared/bridged line and not in-line with the phone itself.  UNLESS, it is a Cisco manufacturing partner that has been permitted to modify the phone itself.

Good luck with your search.

Bill

Re: External Speakers for Ring Only.

Hey Tom,

We use the Stinger Ringer (Model 196) from Dees Communications. We have used both an Analog port off a VG or ATA to power this device. This thing is super loud and works well for us. It is "line powered"

Here is a link to the actual doc:

Hope this helps!

Re: External Speakers for Ring Only.

Bummer I was afraid of that. May I ask what model Stinger you used? Did it have the external power supply?

Why did you use a VG202 ATA? Would an ATA186 work?

Did you need another run of Ethernet? I wonder if I could config it like this

Cisco Phone>>>OFF phone Ethernet port>>>to ATA>>>analog to Stinger Ringer.

Thanks, Tom

Re: External Speakers for Ring Only.

Actually, I used a VG-224 because that was our design approach for analog stations in general.  I suspect others analog gateway solutions would work.  The stinger ringer was just like a regular analog phone.  At least the model I used was.  Sorry, I don't recall the exact model.  No, it (the stinger ringer) did not require its own power source.  In regards to an ethernet drop. Well that depends.  If you are adding a device to act as a gateway, then a new drop would be required.
