Hi,
I am a still total newbie to IP-phony, so please have a little patient with me, I am trying to learn .
If I would like to upgrade the firmware on my "CISCO IP Phone 7940 series", in our "Cisco Unified CM Administration - System version: 7.0.1.11000-2" installation, how do I do this?
Where can I download the latest firmware update to my phone, and where do I import this firmware and how do I deploy it to my phone through the Cisco Unified CM Administration?
Kind regards,
Carl-Marius

Hi Carl-Marius,
No worries here
Just to add a note to the great tips from Phil (+5 Phil)
Here's how;
Firmware Files via the new Software Downloads on Cisco.com;
Cisco.com> Support > Software Downloads > Voice and Unified Communications > IP Telephony > IP Phones > 7900 series > Cisco Unified IP Phone 7940G > Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) Software > 8.1(2) > cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-1-2.cop.sgn
Make sure you always use the cop.sgn version for CUCM 7.x
Cisco Unified IP Phone 7940/7960 SCCP Firmware Load 8.1(2)
http://www.cisco.com/web/software/282074289/28099/cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-1-2-readme.html
This is done via OS Admin>Software Upgrades
Software Upgrades
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can use the Software Upgrades options to perform the following types of installations and upgrades:
Install/Upgrade-Use this option to upgrade the application software, install Cisco Unified Communications Manager Locale Installers and dial plans, and upload and install device packs, phone firmware loads, and other COP files.
TFTP File Management-Use this option to upload various device files for use by the phones to the TFTP server. The TFTP server files that you can upload include custom phone rings, callback tones, and phone backgrounds.

When using Cisco Unified CallManager Release 5.0 or later
For Cisco Unified CallManager 5.0, you must do all software installations and upgrades by using the Software Upgrades menu options. The system can upload and process only software that Cisco Systems approved. You cannot install or use third-party or Windows-based software applications that you may have been using with a previous version of Cisco Unified CallManager with Cisco Unified CallManager 5.0.
Using your web browser, login to the Cisco IPT Platform Administration web page
Under the Software Upgrades menu, select Install/Upgrade.
Fill in the appropriate values in the Software Location section for the file you downloaded above, and click Next.
In the Available Software drop-down box, select the file you downloaded above, and click Next.
After validating the MD5 has the correct value, click Next.
In the Warning box, verify you have selected the correct firmware, then click Install.
Check that you received a Success message.

Hi Carl-Marius,
To upgrade firmware you will need to download from Cisco.com with a valid CCO login.
Once you have the software go to GUI and choose OS Administration - Install/Upgrade
Upload the file to CUCM - note that you will need to load it to all nodes in the cluster
Restart TFTP server
Go into a phone configuration page and set the Phone Load Name to the relevant firmware and reset the phone
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the points!
If you have multiple loads for a particular phone type on your TFTP server, do you know what determines the default load for that phone type i.e. if you do not specify a phone load for the device?
Cheers,
Phil

Hi
There is a default load for each phone model, configured in the Device/Device Settings/Device Defaults page in CCMAdmin.

Hey Phil,
You are most welcome my friend
I'm not sure why someone gave me a "2" rating when I just spent
alot of time working this out Step by Step for Carl-Marius, it's very
disappointing to say the least! I wonder why I even bother to try and
help at this point
Phil...the firmware is referenced on the "Device Defaults" page within
CUCM Admin. If a phone is not set with a "specific" firmware via the
method you noted on the phone config itself, it will use the firmware that
is set on the "Device Defaults".
Cheers!

Rob,
I was the cuplrit that gave you a 2 rating - it was a mistake though! I was clicking on 5, but it wasn't working, so I worked my way down the scale until 2 worked, but it didn't give me a chance to change it!
I've plus 5'd you on your second answer to make amends. :-)
Cheers,
Phil

Hey Phil,
Thanks man! I feel better now knowing this, I did the same thing
to TCAT not too long ago. Sorry for the whining
Cheers!
