Installing Device Pack for 8831 phones

Zane May

Our CM is running v 7.1.5 and we would like to support some new 8831 Conference phones. To do this we need to apply Device Pack 7.1.5.36121-2.cop.sgn  My concern is that it will update firmware on existing IP phones. I don't want that, I only want to be able to configure and support the 8831's. Can someone help me with this quesion?

Thanks - Zane

Hi Zane,

If you aren't running this firmware;

Cisco Unified IP Phones

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Device Package Release provides the following updates

for Cisco Unified IP Phones:

Release 9.3(1)SR2 for

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7906, 7911, 7931,

7941, 7961, 7942, 7962, 7945, 7965

, 7970, and 7975

http://www.cisco.com/web/software/282074299/102827/cmterm-devicepack-7_1_5_36121-2_Readme.pdf

Then the Device defaults will be changed for all of these models and they will

try to upgrade the next time they are re-booted so your concerns are valid.

You would need to copy the current Device defaults and save them off-line, stop

the TFTP service before starting and then copy the "old" Device Defaults back in

before re-starting the TFTP service.

Cheers!

Rob

Hi Zane,

the  Device pack would enable only 8831 IP phones.

You need to install DP first on CUCM for successful regsitration of 8831.

you can refer readme of SIP 9.3(3)

http://www.cisco.com/web/software/282074288/99263/cmterm-8831-sip.9-3-3-5-readme.html

regds,

aman

Thanks Aman! I appreciate the reply.

++ If we do not have option to add the required  phones in the Call Manager(CUCM) it means that the device pack needs to be installed. For eg: Only a 88XX firmware upload will not add the phone option (phone type). It will only upgrade the already existing firmware version.

++ Uploading the device pack version means that the new features in that device pack will be added in CUCM and also all the phone’s firmware will be upgraded to the latest one as in the device pack across the cluster.

This document provides the detailed steps on this procedure for 8.6.2 http://www.cisco.com/web/software/282074299/121469/cmterm-devicepack8.6.2_26157-1_Release_Notes.pdf

“Apply this device package to all of your Cisco Unified Communications Manager servers, beginning with the publisher server and the TFTP server.

When you apply a Device Package to enable new device support, a cluster-wide reboot is required for those devices to register successfully. A cluster-wide reboot is not required when you apply a Device Package to update existing firmware or configuration.”

++  When you do not want the other phones in cluster to be upgraded to new firmware the following steps can be followed. This is not documented anywhere, but is  widely followed procedure.

  1. Make a list of the current Device Defaults in the CUCM.
  2. Deactivate the TFTP services so that the phones will not be upgraded. Since TFTP is not running, the phones will pick the details from the flash which has the older firmware details.
  3. Apply the device package to all of your Cisco Unified Communications Manager servers, beginning with the publisher server and the TFTP server.
  4. Perform a reboot of the cluster.
  5. Change the device defaults which are now upgraded to the latest version to the ones in step 1. This can be also be done manually typing in the older versions.
  6. Activate the TFTP service.

++ In either of the cases a cluster reboot is a must. Phones will not register to any server, that was not rebooted, even though it has device pack installed. So you need to reboot all servers after applying the DP to make sure it takes affect.

maeswara - Although you are replying to an old post but still you deserve +5 mate, for adding in accurate and comprehensive information, someone will benefit from this definitely.
