Just out of curiousity - can a hub or switch be connected to an IP phone with a pc or 3 connected to the hub or switch?

Although it's possible but I really think it is BAD practice. Mini hubs/switches are usually low quality and unmanageable product with high failure rates.

I had a major network interruption due to this scenario. User came off a mini switch into a 7940, from there into a LinkSys Wireless (DHCP enabled). Guess what happend? The whole floor (250 phones) was down for few hours and believe me this was the last thing that I could think of.

My personal experience says I will never recommend a switch connected to a phone.

I agree with MK, thing is that in many many cases there are not enough ports for all needs or are not located conveniently, so a bad practice become more or less tolerated.
