Basic difference - FXS used

Basic difference - FXS used for endpoint analog equipment (analog phones, faxes) and FXO used to connect to PSTN with analog line. But when you're connecting to old PBX systems - you can choose to be PSTN side or end side so you choose if buying FXO or FXS...basically your current type of PBX system defines what options you have.

I see it this way:Analog

I see it this way:

Analog Trunk Port - FXO or FXS (PSTN or Analog phone port)

E1 Interface - everthing clear E1 PRI interface

Integration of Voice mail and FAX on Outlook - Cisco unity connection and fax server software

No. of ports for simultaneous FAX service access - maybe again you can resolve this with fax server software

Hi Dragan, Thanks for your

Hi Dragan,

Thanks for your valuable response

are we required to propose 32 FXO or FXS ports to have 32 Analog Trunk ports ?

Which cisco router does support 15 E1 ports ?

please let me know if there is any FAX server software you recommend

Best regards

For analog trunks - you need

For analog trunks - you need to give more details of your request. There must be some description which gives you directions to go - FXS or FXO.

15 E1 ports - I think that you have 2-port VWIC cards for ISR G2 routers - so go with platform in which you can put 8 of these cards. For example - not sure for 2951, but I think that 3900 series will do job for you...

FAX server software - rigthfax (opentext rigthfax now or something similar)...

Hi Dragan,the client has an

Hi Dragan,

the client has an old PBX and they want it to be integrated with the proposed Cisco UC solution. my plan is to use FXO card for the trunk but what makes me confused is they've requested 32 analog trunk ports. so do i need to have 32 FXO ports ? Please kindly help

In addition to the above they also requested the Power failure Transfer Circuit which routes the trunk lines to CUCM. in the event of failure at CUCM the PFT must route the analog trunk lines to analog extensions.

Well this is interesting - I

Well this is interesting - I also have had one customer with similar request to save it's old PBX and in case of Cisco failure - just switch PSTN ISDN cables and everything works with old system...

So regarding your integration - it's possible definitelly...what type to use FXO or FXS depends on what you have on existing PBX - if there are FXOs type of interfaces then you need FXS and opposite. This problem with PFT is a little difficult to implement that way - but maybe some electricity guy could maybe make this for you.

But what about the 32 Analog

But what about the 32 Analog Trunks ?

for the gateway I'll propose Cisco 2951 with 4 port E1 line

If you need 32 FXS port you

If you need 32 FXS port you can go with SM-D-48FXS-E (it's supported in 2951):

http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/unified-communications/vg-series-gateways/c78_722469_00_high_density_analog_service_module_ds_v2a.pdf

If you need 32 FXO ports situation is little complicated...I think you need bigger chasis (3900 probably) and you must make a combination of 8 x 4-port FXO card. You can put these cards in VWIC slots on your choosen ISR G2 router or in network module (ie NM-HD-2V) which you put also in your selected router (because you already need 4 port for E1 PRI...)

So it's going to be some kind of monster voice gateway smiley

And don't foget to choose adequate number of DSPs also...

Or go with 2 router chassis - one for E1 PRI and other for analog connections...

Hi Dragan,

I don't know what to say but thanks a lot.

What is the basic difference b/n FXS & FXO ports for creating analog trunks ?
