Jump 7.1.5-9.1 Unable to restore on rebuilt 9.1 cluster - Cannot find the deployment type

I'm doing jump upgrade from 7.1.5 to 9.1.

I am at the final step where I should rebuild the 9.1 cluster to realign partitions but there is an error when I try to do so.

So this is what I have done:

-Built virtual cluster of 7.1.5

-DRS backup of actual 7.1.5 cluster

-DRS restore on virtual 7.1.5 cluster

-Upgrade of virtual 7.1.5 cluster to 9.1

-DRS backup of upgraded 9.1 cluster

-Installed now 9.1 cluster (with same name and IP) to realign partitions

And now I'm trying to import the DRS backup made on upgraded 9.1 cluster.

The error I get when I try to restore is:

ERROR: Unable to restore the data - Cannot find the deployment type, Restore  Completed...

And it stops immidiately.

I noticed that this happens if I try to restore CCM.

If I dont' choose CCM in the restore wizard then the other components are restored successfully.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Regards.

Hi there,

Check out this good thread and the TAC notes described relating to

the CCM portion

https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3741181#3741181

Cheers!

Hi Rob,

I found that before posting the question

It's strange that a thing like this that should be ignored would appear in the backup but it is not mentioned anywhere in the upgrade guide.

Do you think that I should just ignore that portion of the backup?

Hi there,

I had a long look through all the docs & Bug notes as well and do find it strange

that there is no mention of this ??

The explanation in the thread does make sense to me but being

that I'm a paranoid person I would engage the d29 TAC just to make sure

Cheers!

Do you think this might be caused because I installed the virtual CUCM 7.1.5 machines as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and not as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3?

I used the OVA file but I didn't manualy change the machine type to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 from the default Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

I've seen that deselecting the ELM and ELM-Agent when doing the restore works.  You shouldn't lose anything by doing this because you would not have licenses on your system yet.  Would you give that a try and let us know if the restore completes please?

Hi Joseph,

do you mean leaving CCM selected and deselecting ELM and ELM-Agent?

Yes exactly.

I will try that tommorow. Thank you. Just two quick questions:

-What exactly is deployment type? (The error I get is Unable to restore the data - Cannot find the deployment type).

-And what would be the repercussions of installing CICM 7.1.5 cluster on virtual machines that are set for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (and not as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3)?

Deselecting ELM and ELM-Agent didn't help either.

We ended up starting everything from scratch.

This time there was no CCM in the backup at all ao the restore went smoothly

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond.

Best regards.

Hello,

In later versions of CUCM, such as 11.5, this issue can be resolved by unchecking the Selfcare checkbox under the Restore Components.  Unfortunately I cannot comment on the CUCM 9.1 cluster.

Hope this helps someone else in the future!

What do you lose by unchecking Selfcare?

Bill-

I didn't lose any configuration.
