Migrating ISDN BRI Service to Cisco ISR from NEC System

Hey Everyone,

Im migrating 4x BRI Lines from an NEC PABX to a Cisco 2901 ISR.

The existing BRIs are is service and are functioning correctly. I tried to cutover tonight but found the L2 could not be established.

Show ISDN Status, Im getting either Awaiting Establishment or TEI ASSIGNED. Layer 1 flicks between Active and then Deactivated

Debugs are below

The Telco has been no help, they say because the ISDN was working with the NEC System, their side is working as per normal. The did give an error they receive. async for U point. The Telco engineer did say in his experience there may be a problem somewhere between the exchange and the NTU.

I basically unplugged the network cable from the NEC System, and plugged it into the Cisco ISR...

I have the general config for a BRI interface

switch type basic-net3

static tei 0

point to point

incoming voice

standard stuff... I have several other ISRs on this same Telco network with the exact same config and they work like a treat.

I have cleared the interface several times and also shutdown the interface several times.. I have even defaulted the interface and configured again. I have also reloaded the router to no luck

Can anyone point me in any direction, I'd like to understand how an exchange signals to an ISR and an NEC, are they different in terms of ISDN setups messages, do I  need to speciifically advise the Telco to reset anything etc, could this be a cable issue?

Much appreciated.

Ben

Hi Ben,

Just a thought on cable : Are u using S/T or U interface on ISDN card available on router? check the pin details:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/1600/hardware/installation/guide/Cabl.html

What port is available on working ISR router?

Are u using NT1 for connecting to NEC ?

regds,

aman

Hi Aman,

Thanks for your response.

The existing connection has a rollover cable connected to the NEC from the NT device. I did try a straight through, but this also didnt seem to work, although I must say I did most of my config changes and resets while the rollover was connected.

The ISDN Line is connected to an S/T port, and the cable going to the Router is connected to the U port on the Telco box

Im not too ofay with BRI technologies etc.. The BRI Card I have installed is a VIC2-2BRI-NT/TE.

Im not exactly sure what you mean by the last question?

Also with your first question, is there a way to determine if the ISDN interface is using the U or S/T Interface on ISDN card?

Cheers

Ben

Sorry Aman,

Yes, we are using an NT1 device between the NEC System and the Telco exchange, NEC System also connected to the U port on the NT1 device.

From reading the Pin Outs, I will replace the rollover cable with a straight through cable and clear/reset all BRI interfaces and see what the outcome is.

cheers

Ben

Hey Guys,

This was resolved.. the cable from the U port was incorrectly plugged into the ISR. Once a cable was connected to the S/T port on the nt device to the ISR, everything worked.. one of those days..

Cheers

Ben

Hi Ben,

thanks for update.

Good issue is resolved.
