Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

All new hardware.  Going from CM 4.1 to CM8 and Unity4.1 to Unity 8.

The Unity work will all be performed at cutover.

Steps:

- Extend ADSchema, Exch 2003.  Per TAC:  I could not run this early because Unity4x in production.

- Install Unity 8 on new server.
- On old Unity 4.05
   * Run DB walker (ver 4.0.63) CLEAN DB
   * Backup using newest DIRT
   * Run Cobras
   * Run Remove Subscriber Properties before
     Cobras import on new server (ver1.0Build7)
- After Unity 8 installed.
   * Cobras import.
   * Bring into production.
My question: How do I treat the primary/failover?
Do I need to take the failover offline?
Are there other steps I need to include?

Thanks in Advance - Teri

Re: Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

Question:  Did you buy 2 new servers for the Unity 8 build?  If so, you build the Unity 8 primary and get failover running and then the COBRAS import data will be replicated.

Otherwise, when you build your new Unity 8 server the best way to go about things is to rebuild the old server (if you're keeping it) and get it set up with the new Unity 8 primary.  Same as what was said above would apply.

Re: Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

wow David ...FAST reply.

Yes...all new hardware.

The existing Unity 4.x has a primary/failover.

This customer wants little downtime.  I have agreed to install the primary for this cut and install the failover another time.

Re: Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

If you are going to do failover later then I'd shut the Unity service down on the 4.x after you clean subscriber properties and move from there.

Re: Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

In addition,   if I have to fall back to the old Unity 4.1 ....

Steps for fallback:

Extend ADscheme for Unity 4.x

Run Cobras Import on the old server.

Bring into production.

Am I leaving anything out?

Thanks,   Teri

Re: Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

Can I run Cobras Export on the old Unity4.1 during production hours?

Re: Migration from Unity 4.1 to Unity 8

If you have to failback, you'lll need to remove subscriber properties again (if the servers are in the same AD domain).  You can run COBRAS during production hours...as long as you don't have a HUGE DB (for example, I did this for a client with 5000 users and 50K messages - wouldn't do that during the day).  If the system is small or you're not migrating messages, you'll be fine.
