need help on translation pattern

Dear Friends, I want to know why we use # symbal in the translation pattern. 3210.#9xxxxxxxxxx.

why we are using # in the translation pattern, some time # in the end of the translation pattern.

pls let me in details why we are using? what is the use of it.

We have a service parameter in which we disable the # to be a terminating digit

Now # will act as any other valid number.
