Obtain CallManager 7.x licenses from CallManager 4.x cluster

Hello.

We have a CallManager 4.x cluster (two servers) and we want to obtain the licenses to install CallManager 7.x on another cluster (other two servers), i.e. without buying other licenses (if possible).

We don't want to upgrade the software on the old servers, but we want to install the new software directly on the new servers.

Is there a way to obtain that?

Thanks and regards.

Do you have a current software subscription on the CallManager 4 servers?  There is a cost, one way or another, of upgrading software.  Are you working with a Cisco Account Manager?

You need to be current with UCSS and/or ESW support and then use the Product Upgrade Tool (PUT) to order the 4x to 7x upgrade kit.  When you do this, you'll get an upgrade kit (not sure you'll get media for a fresh install) and a PAK code.  When you receive the PAK, you email licensing@cisco.com to get your existing 4x licenses rehomed to the 7x server(s).  If you order new hardware preloaded with 7x, you wont have to worry about whether you get fresh install media in the upgrade kit as you will with the new servers.  But you still need to order the upgrade kit to get the PAK necessary for licensing.

FYI - if you're current on support (UCSS/ESW) then you will not have to pay money for the upgrade.

To upgrade the CUCM software you need to buy new server licenses (e.g. if you had two new MCS7825 servers you would order 2 x LIC-CM7.1-7825=) but your existing phone licenses can be converted into DLU's free of charge.

The normal process is to install Data Migration Assistant on your CCM4.x Publisher which will create a TAR file containing all the data. As part of the CUCM7.x Publisher install you load this TAR file from an SFTP server and it imports all your 4.x data. You then follow the procedure in the document at the link below to obtain your license file.

Once you have the new license file you can trash your server and re-install CUCM 7.x without importing the TAR data if you want to start from a clean slate.

James,

we have two new servers (MCS7816) and two upgrade licenses (CM7.1-U-K9-7816=).

Can we obtain device license units in the same way you have explained? Or do we have to follow another procedure?

Thanks and regards.

Hi

Yes, it's always the same procedure for upgrades from 4.x to Linux.
