phone mac and call manager

Why will the call manager need to know the mac address of the phone in the first place when a new phone was added? If the phone and call manager are in two different subnet, call manager will not be able to see the mac of the phone at all.

Callmanager uses the MAC address to register each phone with a unique name. The phone will have the name SEP in CCM.
