All,
can the 7945G and 7965G phones recieve adequate power on Cat5 (not Cat5e)?
Thanks in advance! All replies rated.

Hi Scott,
We have an older portion of our campus that is still wired with
Cat5 (not E) and 7945/65's work fine there
Cheers!

Scott,
The IEEE recommendation for PoE is Cat 5 or higher. The original specification even supported Cat3 (lower level power consumption).

As what Rob and David said, yes it'll work with Cat5 and up.
However, just make sure that the cable has all four pairs terminated. I've been to some Cat5-cabled buildings and the cable contractors only cabled up the first and second pair. This means that no matter what kind of client the site will deploy they can only get up to FastEthernet speed on their computer and no PoE.
It was an expensive option to rip out the old cable to put a new ones in when the occupants were about to move in. Imagine the sight of having a power-injector/power brick next to the phone.
