Secure VPN-less way of registering IP Communicator and/or SIP client

Does anyone have any suggestions on making a secure but vpn-less connection (registration/call setup/rtp) from the Internet to a CallManager 7 telephony infrastructure (with IP Communicator)?  I

One way to do this is with the phone proxy function on an ASA.

Yes, I've seen this one pager but has anyone implemented it?  It doesnt go into too much configuration details, any one have some example configs? Does it work with IP Communicator?
