Does Cisco support soft phones anymore ? Does CUCM 5x & 6x support soft-phones? I mean can we migrate phones in CUCM 4x to CUCM 5x or 6x? Or do we repalce them with hard-phones / IP Communicators?

Hi Abhijit,
Life is good :) I'm not very familiar with the Citrix piece, but everything else should be good to go!
Minimum and Recommended Requirements for Cisco IP Communicator
Connectivity
128 kbps network connection
From this excellent doc;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cipc/2_1/english/release/notes/ol113782.html#wp57272
You can also leverage this setting;
Use Optimize for Low Bandwidth with Cisco Conference Connection

Hope this helps! Nice to talk again,

Hi Abhijit,
Hope all is well with you! The Softphone is no longer supported in CCM 5.x and 6.x versions :( They must replaced as you nicely noted;
End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for Cisco IP SoftPhone
This program was available in 2006, but is no longer valid.
Program Offer for Exchanging Cisco IP Softphone for Cisco IP Communicator
Hope this helps!

Hi Rob,
Nice to hear from you again. Hope all's well with you.
Thanks for the great post. One more question though - when a user from home tries to connect to the corporate network through VPN & tries to use an IP Communicator, the minimum bandwidth required should be 512kbps correct? ( the user will also use a Citrix session concurrently). Think 256 will be very tight as far as audio quality is concerned.
Thanks again & have a nice day.
Regards,
Abhijit Das.

Need one more help Rob - do we need separate licenses for IP Communicators for CUCM 4.1(3)?
Thanks again,
Abhijit.

Hi Abhijit,
No worries! Yes, when you purchase the IPC you will need 1 User License/Per. The standard "old" (CAL) License.
Hope this helps!

Rob,
If it's not too rude a question to ask, exactly what upgrade are you working on ? From the way you have put it, seems something major. Wish you all the best in your project! May everything go well...

Hi Abhijit,
Not too rude at all my friend :) We are doing a CCM upgrade and replacing our MCS servers in conjunction with this change. We have spent many hours in the lab in preparation as well as upgrading all of our phone firmware/models ahead of time.One of the problems we encountered in our last upgrade involved running DHCP services "on box" so we have moved that function to a new VMWare DHCP Server as well. Our change management plan for this upgrade was over 5 pages in length so I hope we have covered all the bases.
Thanks for your good wishes!
Take care,
Rob

Thanks Rob for the reply, won't like to disturb you any more till next week since you are busy with your changes.
All the best & take care..
Abhijit.
