Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Hi all,

Please help. Having trouble trying to configure a MGCP gateway on CUCM 7.0 for the first time. I've added the 2821 router as an MGCP gateway and have selected Slot 0. When I try to save the subunits it fails with a blank screen and no subunits are added.

My 2821 includes:

SubSlot 0: HWIC-4T (4 x serial)

SubSlot 1: VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (2 x E1)

SubSlot 2: HWIC-4B-S/T (4 x BRI)

SubSlot 3: VIC3-2FXS/DID (2 x FXS)

SubSlot 4: PVDM2-32 (DSP's)

1. Is it valid to have these cards installed together? They show up fine on the router.

2. The serial module is not available in the dropdown list on CUCM - should I leave this as <None>?

3. The HWIC-4B-S/T is not available either. How can I add support for this?

4. Initially I only want to configure the E1 link. Do I have to remove the other interface cards?

Sorry if this is an simple question, I have searched other forums without success. If you need any more info, please let me know.

Thanks, Elton.

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Hi

No maybe about it I'm afraid.

Look at your other cards:

HWIC-4T  - HWIC=High-Speed WAN Interface Card
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 - VWIC=Voice/WAN Interface Card
VIC3-2FXS/DID - VIC=Voice Interface Card

My advice would be don't trust what dodgy resellers say about the cards - always check the product documentation on Cisco.com. The Data Sheet for this card is at this URL and is titled 'Cisco 4-Port ISDN BRI S/T High-Speed WAN Interface Card'

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/modules/ps5949/data_sheet_c78_439536.html

There is no BRI card that supports both voice and data from Cisco unfortunately; I know this seems odd (trips us all up when we're starting out in this technology) but I'm sure there are good reasons for it...

Cisco support won't be able to tell you much more than this; other than the cards you should be looking at would be a VIC2-2BRI-NT/TE (2 BRI ports = 4 channels) .. or if you need more port density there is a high density option which includes FXS ports on an NM that can have two 4-port BRI daughtercards added to it:

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Hi

Genearlly for a 2800 you set SLot 0 as the 'MBRD' component, and can then add your VWICs.

You don't add anything that isn't voice capable, or that you don't want CCM to meddle with - so if you just have the FXS and VWIC E1 cards for CCM/voice, just add those.

The other cards (BRI/Serial) are non-voice, so ignore them. CCM doesn't need to know...

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Thanks for the reply Aaron.

The HWIC-4B-S/T is a voice card (4x Basic Rate ISDN). How can I add support for this since it doesnt show up in the list? I'm using CUCM 7.1.5 which should be current.

And just to  confirm - it's fine to have non-voice boards installed and I should just leave them set to and then CUCM ignores them?

Thanks, Elton.

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

That doesn't sound like a voice card

Connecting ISDN BRI S/T High-Speed WAN Interface  Cards to a Network

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/routers/access/interfaces/ic/hardware/installation/guide/ISDN_BRI_ST_hwic.html

The HWIC-4B-S/T connects to an ISDN WAN network  through an external Network Termination 1 (NT1) device

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Hi guys,

Hmmm. Maybe you guys are right. It definately doesnt say anything about supporting voice on the Cisco website. I've never heard of a basic rate module that doesnt support voice - both voice and data use NT1 device for connection!

According to these websites selling the card:

"Cisco Systems HWIC-4B-S/T= - Cisco High-Speed WAN Interface Card 4-Port ISDN BRI S/T - Voice / fax module - plug-in module - HWIC - ISDN BRI ST - 4 digital port(s)"

http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/Cisco_High_Speed_WAN_Interface_Card_4_Port_ISDN_BRI_S_T/HWIC4BST/10634453/

http://www.pcsuperstore.com/products/10634453-Cisco-HWIC4BST.html

Maybe they are wrong! I've raised a support request with Cisco to clairify since we purchased this module for voice services. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks, Elton.

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Hi Aaron,

You're are 100% correct. Cisco TAC confirmed it too although they we're somewhat unsure themselves initially and they tested it in their lab. The HWIC-4B-S/T card can be used for a WAN interface only (voice is not supported).

I'm still having some issues getting the subunits to register on the gateway but I think its a DNS problem and if I need to I'll post a new topic.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers, Elton.

Re: Subunits in MGCP Gateway

Hi

Wow... TAC lab things like that up? Despite it being on the data sheet... shocker..

Re: the gateway registration, the biggest stumber with MGCP for most people is the name to use when adding it to CCM.

Basically do this command:

sh ccm-manager

It will list the 'MGCP DOmain Name', which is the combination of hostname and DNS domain (the DNS domain it may have picked up from DHCP at some point, or may be configured). Basically configure in CCM whatever it shows in this command, and you should be OK as long as you've set the right cards in the right slots...

Regards

Aaron
