UC500 Unified Communications Manager Express T.38 Fax

Looking for help troubleshooting an issue where fax is failing. The call connects, hear fax tone, and transaction eventually fails as if it times out. Status report says either "no memory" or "low memory". The problem is intermitent - 1 out of 4 faxes will be successfully transmitted. Maintenance company switched out the fax module on the machine and problem persists.

Platform is UC520 running Advanced IP Services 15.1(4)M5. Faxes are sent through SIP provider to PSTN.  I don't believe it's a provider issue, as other clients using the same provider with no problems.  Attached is "debug ccsip messages" and "debug voice ccapi inout". I don't see any errors, but perhaps I'm overlooking something.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. I see what you're saying, Kevin. However, it looks to me like that is a register message. Look at line 738. It shows "200 OK" for call from fax machine to PSTN.

Am I misinterpreting the debug? Does anything else catch your eye?

Thanks again.

UC500 Unified Communications Manager Express T.38 Fax

Hi Brad,

Here is the analysis of the debugs.

Does the ITSP support T.38, If yes then we would need to add the following on dial-peer 1001 voip:

dial-peer voice 1 voip

  fax protocol t38 nse ls-redundancy

  fax-relay ecm disable

  fax nsf 000000

  fax-relay sg3-to-g3

Let me know how if this works.

Outgoing fax from teh UC520:

UC500 Unified Communications Manager Express T.38 Fax

Hi Kevin,

I just want to make sure this won't have any negative impact on regular voice calls using this dial peer.  Is it okay to have both fax and voice on the same dial peer?

Thanks,

Brad

UC500 Unified Communications Manager Express T.38 Fax

T.38 will only be used when a CED tone is detected. Normal voice calls are not affected.

fax protocol t38 version 0 ls-redundancy 0 hs-redundancy 0 fallback pass-through g711ulaw

Keven suggested this:

dial-peer voice 1 voip

  fax protocol t38 nse ls-redundancy

  fax-relay ecm disable

  fax nsf 000000

  fax-relay sg3-to-g3

In general I would advise not to use NSE based T.38 as it is a Cisco proprietary implementation. (Not even supported by eg Cisco ATA187.)

Instead try standard based aka protocol based T.38 by relacing the the fax protocol command with

"fax protocol t38 version 0 ls-redundancy 0 hs-redundancy 0 fallback pass-through g711ulaw"

Best regards

Thank you both for your suggestions.  I have implemented and will allow a few days for the customer to test.  The value of the support community cannot be overstated.  It's as good, if not better, than TAC.

Best regards,

Hi Brad,

This wont affect your Voice calls, because once the Voice calls establish then only  T.38 (FAXING) or the switchover with take place.

I have given a example  of the T.38 call flow along with  the switchover in the diagram below:

Thank you, Kevin.  I think this did the trick.  Do I also need to do this for the inbound dial peer?
