Understanding Technology Prefix

Hi

I have read allot about the technology prefix setting but still no clear on what it does.

Is it used to allow a gateway to dynamically register with the gatekeeper and the gatekeeper sets the same technology prefix.

When you configure the technology prefix to a gateway can you limit the bandwidth within a zone to a sub bandwidth amount for the gateway by assigning it to the technology prefix. IE Zone Test =1Mbs and Technology prefix 1# in Zone Test is given say 200Kbs.

Would greatly appreciate someone clarifying how and why you use the technology prefix.

Thanks

Bill

Bill,

Techprefix is a prefix used for routing by the gatekeeper. If there are multiple gateways in a zone and when gatekeeper needs to the route the call, the gatekeeper checks the techprefix that was received in the call to route it to the appropriate gateway. If a techprefix was not found in the incoming call setup, and a default tech prefix is configured, calls will route to the gateway associated with the default tech prefix. Kind of like a gateway of last resort in the routing and switching world.

Bandwidth is controlled per zone, between zones or within a zone using bandwidth total commands. This has nothing to do with tech prefixes.
