Unity 4.X slow to respond

I have users complaining that when they attempt to retrieve voicemail messages, the process takes a very long time (up to ten minutes they state) from the point where they enter their passwords, to the point where they hear the system respond with options.  I'm pretty new at supporting Unity and don't really know where to begin looking for the problem and how to fix it.  The problem is intermittent and I have not been unsuccessful at reproducing the error myself.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I will rate the posts.  thanks,
