Our Unity subscribers all have a 10-digit extensions (eg 904-555-4444)
In CallManager the phones have 10-digit DN (eg 904-555-4444), with a Translation Pattern that allows 1XXXX to expand to 904-555-XXXX. You can dial 5 digits from phone to phone and it expands to 10 digits.
In a the Opening Greeting Call Handler is there a way to allow callers inputting 1XXXX to transfer to CallManager to do the expansion work and ring a phone? Since 1XXXX doesn’t match a subscriber you just get an error message today.

You would need to send them a call system transfer and make sure that the pattern you'll be dialing is allowed by the restrictions tables.
The on VM ports you need to reach the TP for the call to succeed.

Under Call Handlers > (Handler Name) > Caller Input I have a check in "Allow callers to dial an extension during greeting".
The Greeting says" Thank you for calling Acme Corporation, at any time please enter your parties 5 digit extension". All extensions start with 1XXXX, so how would it recognizie 1XXXX and send that to a System Transfer?
Do you have this working in production?

Yes. But within Unity all you can dial are DNs that Unity is already aware of, meaning, something in Unity needs to have it configured.
A call system transfer, on the other hand, lets you dial anything your restriction tables allows.
Unity won't recognize "ohhh it's 1XXXX so I'll send it to a call system transfer". You need to configure the behavior of sending users directly to a system transfer after playing a greeting in a previous call handler or setting an option within a call handler "if you know the 5 digit extension press 6" and use caller input to direct them to a call system transfer.
