Unity Exchange upgrade

We are running Exchange 5.5 on Unity 4.0(3). Is it possible to upgrade to Exchange 2000 / Exchange 2003 without affecting anything on Unity?

Note - Exchange 5.5 is on the same box as Unity 4.0(30, but the Unity server is a member of our company domain. i.e. AD is integrated.

When installing unity with exchange 2003, exchange will be installed in a separate server and later import users from AD.
