Upgrade to CUCM 7.1(5b)

Hi all, I'm running CUCM 7.1(2), is it possible a direct upgrade to 7.1(5b).

However, the general consensus of most folks on the forum is that you'd be better served to go with 7.1(3b)SU2.

I wish it was easy enough to get the original media for 7.1.3 version, Cisco only ships out the 7.1(5b) version.

Personally, I always use SFTP and a downloaded upgrade file from CCO unless for some reason (i.e., licensing) I would be required to order an upgrade kit. So, I'd suggest SFTP and using CopSSH.  We (my colleagues at NetCraftsmen)  use it exclusively and, so far, without any of the issues you read about here with other products.  Here is a blog my colleague put together on CopSSH and how to set it up.

Hi David, thanks a lot for your suggestion. I tried the upgrade from 7.1(2) to 7.1(5b) using SFTP and local DVD, but I receive the same error "An unknown error occurred while accessing the upgrade file".

I check the md5 (UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.5.30000-1.sgn.iso  -  272eee358eeb4d50dc1986cb54bb21fa)

You will have to post the complete logs for us to suggest.

How long did the upgrade go before it failed?

Go to the RTMT tool>>trace collection>>collect files>> check the upgrade install logs>> select the range in which you tried the upgrade.

You also might want to have a look at the pre upgrade  tasks:

After looking at the upgrade logs we can suggest why it failed, ans what needs to be done next.

Hi, Kunal, thanks for your support, I copy the install/upgrade logs. The upgrade fails while the CUCM is accessing the upgrade file.

Did you put the iso file on the DVD or did you burn the image?

This is what I'd recommend....download the ISO files of the upgrade from CCO.  Merge them as per usual process.  Put them on the SFTP server (presumably CopSSH).  Let's assume you create a user called "sftpuser".  Put the file in the home folder for sftpuser.  Conversely, you can rip the ISO to disk and store in the same location.

Don't forget to follow the pre-upgrade instructions (such as installing the COP file for unrestricted upgrades/installs). 

Then do an SFTP upgrade.  When you do the path will be:

/home/sftpuser/

Then the login user will be sftpuser (or whatever user you created) and the password for that user.

When I use SFTP, I received the following error: Error encountered: An unknown error occurred while accessing the upgrade file. MD5 Hash Value:

I will download the file again and I let you know.

Hi David,

You should burn the image so that the files in the iso get extracted to dvd rather than having the iso file as a single file on the dvd.

This is where the SFTP upgrade is different, ie: there you just put the iso file on your SFTP host.

Can you try again? If you're md5 checksum is identical to what's on cco, you shouldn't need to download again.

Just a comment re. upgrading via the network.

Unless there are serious security concerns I normally use FTP rather than SFTP to transfer the upgrade image as it seems to take alot less time (I would guess at 30%).

This can be a big help if you have limited time to complete the upgrade and cannot install the image prior to the change window. I tend to use Sysax Multiserver which was recommended on here.
