Voice gateway, router, cucm and mgcp

Hello,

Lets say I have router 2821 that has pvdm module that turns the router into a voice gateway and has configured mgcp as well as connects to pstn cloud. Then I have another 2821 router which connects to the mpls cloud which  connects to call manager at another site. My question what function does the router have if its meant to connect cisco phones to a call manager, does the router need a pvdm module for rtp or does call manager handle rtp and the router just handle routing packets.  Lets say a cisco phone makes a call to  another cisco  phone at another remote site which goes through the mpls cloud, Beisdes call manager handling the call processing what handles the dsp or pretty the voice part does the router or the other voice gateway or call manager?

Any suggestions.

Re: Voice gateway, router, cucm and mgcp

Hi Horacio.
If all phones are registerd on CUCM, than router connected to MPLS would take care about routing between ip phones for RTP streams (because rtp is end to end between ip phones registered on CUCM) and between CUCM and ip phones for signaling. So in this case it doesn't need PVDM.
If you want to increase Conference Bridge resources or separate them from where CUCM cluster is located, you can add PVDM to that router and add it to CUCM as hardware conference bridge.

DSPs are only required for TDM termination, xcoding, CFB and MTP, phones do not use them for registration or calls, assuming they speak the same codec.

You can register calls across any link as long as theres connectivity and theres routing between the endpoints and CUCM.

Re: Voice gateway, router, cucm and mgcp

Hi Jaime,

If you have two cisco phones that go through mpls cloud and call manager in a different site and each phone goes thru there router. My 3 questions regarding this scenario is as follow.

1.  Is dsp used here thru mpls cloud if not what about pstn cloud thru a voice gateway. Why not use dsp thru mpls cloud?

2. Is RTP used in this scenario thru mpls cloud is call manager creating rtp if yes how?

3. In regards to the two phones where is voice started and how is it done by call manager or phones what is the call process to hear sound?

Re: Voice gateway, router, cucm and mgcp

1.No, read my previous answer and when DPSs are used.

2. RTP is ALWAYS USED, CUCM would be in the call flow if there's need for MTP, TRP, MOH, ANN. Otherwise, as already stated, RTP is directly between endpoints.

3. RTP is generated on each phone, and sent to the other phone directly (or, as above, CUCM might be in between if necessary). There's a DSP on each phone to take RTP and turn it into sound, and vicecersa. Pretty much like anything that can make a sound these days, your mobile, toys, etc.

It sounds like you're not familiar at all with voice over IP, I'd suggest you to google the term and more information about the topic. This is mainly a tech forum for people with problems. There are also a lot of references about DSPs and when/how they're used on Cisco.com
