Hello,

Have anyone implemented voip over Vsat. It is possible? I heard the delay over vsat can be 500ms whereas for voip the end to end delay should not exceed 150ms? any advice would be highly appreciated.

On a sat link you will have high latency. Cisco has developed a VSAT module that is installed in a 3800 series routers. The was especially designed with voice in mind. What makes the VSAT module special is that it supports dedicated sat channel allocation to avoid jitter. The version of Cisco IOS Software that is supported with the VSAT module can generate a dedicated-access trigger for voice calls that originate on the VSAT router. Dedicated-access triggers are enabled on the VSAT router when you:

• Configure a VoIP gateway solution, such as Cisco CallManager Express (Cisco CME)

• Install a hardware voice-over-IP (VoIP) gateway, such as one of the following voice-enabled modules: High-Density Digital/Analog Voice Network Modules (part numbers NM-HDV, NM-HDA, NM-HD-1V, NM-HD-2V, NM-HD-2VE, or EVM-HD, respectively).

• Enable the Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway feature

One thing to note is that you must have a provider that supports this dedicated access channel for voice. http://www.spacenet.com supports this and works very well with the cisco vsat module. H

I've done it and it works great, but it pays to have a provider that actually supports VOIP over sat. Take a look at spacenet. They are great. They're able to prioritize the traffic going up to the bird if it is a voip call..

what was the latency you were getting over the vsat link? I am getting 500ms????

How can i run voip over such a link???
