2600 Router and VLAN

I understand the encapsulation command and that it's needed for VLANs to be entered on the router, but my 2600 doesn't have that as a command in the int f0/0.1 subinterface.

Am I missing something? Or is it not supported?

If it's not supported, what can I do to get it supported (I.e. download another IOS version, upgrade, buy something else...)

Here's what I have:

Version 12.2(17a)

802.1q trunking was incorporated in the 12.3 Mainline or 12.2T

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/lanswitch/command/reference/lsw_b1.html#wp1020413

and you are running 12.2 Mainline.

You need to upgrade IOS.

If you want these details in the future, you can visit the Cisco Feature Navigator http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp and search for features. The intended Feature is IEEE 802.1Q VLAN Trunking

I believe that the issue is the feature set of the code that you are running. (not necessarily the version of code but the feature set) You appear to be running the IP or IP BASE feature set and I believe that VLAN trunking is not supported in that feature set. If you upgrade the feature set to PLUS or something like that I believe that you will get support for encapsulation and VLAN trunking.

If you are going to be changing code a newer version of code might be nice. But the important thing is the feature set.

[edit] it looks like Edison's research was more thorough than mine and that you do need a version upgrade. I still think that there are issues about support for VLAN trunking in the IP BASE feature set.
