I've just come across an old 2948G and need to update it - how do I know if this is an L2 or L3 device. I'm assuming it's L2 as its labled "2948G" only. Can I be sure? Don't want to install the wrong IOS. Thanks

It is a layer 2 switch only . This is also a "catos box" not an IOS box so you have to run catos code on the switch, it is not convertible to IOS. The 8.X train was the last train they made for this switch .

many thanks.

Hi Martin

In addition to Glen's explanation the L3 functionality is built in with the chassis starts from 3500 series..

Hi Prem,

Martin got confused with 2948G-L3 switch which does provide some routing capability.

Regards,

Ankur

oops thx Ankur for pointing me out :-)

I took the reference of Cisco 3500 series switches since C2948G has already reached EOL/EOS status..
