I get a LOOPBACK error message on my 2950 switch which disables the port. What should I check for ? I have no idea where to start. Whats causing this?

Can you please post the exact error and also the output from typing
show interfaces status err-disabled

There was a bug filed but it was junked, because it is mostly caused by a STP loop or bad cabling. The following bug more details on this

You might also want to consider err-disable recovery. You can enable it using
2950-A#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
2950-A(config)#errdisable recovery cause loopback
