3500XL switch and SVI interfaces

Hi

We have some 3500XL switches that we need to configure vlan interfaces on, but when we type nthe command:

Switch(config)#int vlan 100

ip address **.**.**.**/24

no shut

everything looks fine. Then I do a sh run and the interface is showing as Shutdown, and if I do a "no shut" on the interface it comes up and then shuts down again.

We are using IOS version 12.0.(5.3)WC(1) on the 3500XL's.

Can someone tell me why this is happening? Does the IOS not support this config or is it the hardware is to old now?

Please help, all advise very welcome!!

Many thanks

Mark

The 3500XL switch is a L2 switch only so you can only have one vlan interface (SVI) active and that SVI is used for managing the switch.

If you want this SVI to be vlan 100 you need to shut down vlan 1 SVI and then ensure that either

a) at least one port on the switch is allocated to vlan 100

b) the switch has a trunk link that allows vlan 100.
