Just received one of these switches. My understanding is the 10G ports on the

WS-X4908-10G-RJ45 should be able to connect to a 1 G port on another switch.

However I can not get this to happpen. Using either a crossover or straight through cable.

These are only 10Gig ports and not 1Gig.  So, you can't connect a 1Gig port to a 10Gig.

I'm with Reza.

The logic behind the reason (why this line card will only run on 10Gbps) is:  WHY?

Why purchase a very expensive line card and let it run 1 Gbps when there are more affordable line cards with much, much more density.

The reason is why we bought the switch for our ap server to communicate with our database server. But we dont need it on our main network which is only 1 gig. We really dont need all the ports of the 20 port gig card.

And by the way it is possible

the command is

hw-module module 2 port-group 1 select gigabitethernet

this sets port 2/1 and port 2/2 to gig

they are both set due to the way the ASIC in the card works

yes it works
