5548UP as a layer 3 router

Hi,

just a simple question. Is it possible to use a nexus 5548 UP switch as a layer 3 router between different vlans on the switch without the layer 3 card ? Or is there no 5548 as a router with the  layer 3 card ?

Hi,

If you want to use the 5500 series as routers, you need the layer-3 daughter card

see figure-4 in this link:

5548UP as a layer 3 router

Hi

Just to add more details to Reza's post:

you can configure SVI's and even routing protocols (ospf, bgp) on nexus 55XX without having L3 card - commands for that will be available in CLI, but performance will be very weak and nexus won't perform routing for most of the destinations even to localy connected ones.

So as Reza said you will need L3 module for L3 operations and base license which is free.

Hope that answer yur questions.
