6500 auto reload/restart/reboot

Hi all.

We have this serius problem with our 6513: it auto reboots itself randomly, and at this moment we haven't find the cause.

In last year it has reloaded itself many times (ten or more), but it dowsn't write anything in logs (no crashinfo, no warning messages, nothing).

So, we have tried to replace power supply, but it's happened again.

So, we have tried to supply power from another source, but it's happened again.

Last time this weekend, in the night between saturday and sunday (4 am), with no messages again.

At that moment there is virtually no traffic on the LAN (it's an office and the night is closed).

Anyone has an idea or anyone has this problem?

I specify only that, because we have many modules, we use autosaving configuration in nvram:

set config mode text nvram

set config mode text auto-save enable

set config mode text auto-save interval 15

And last, from sh environment power we see that the power is compiant to our needs:

PS1 Capacity: 2331.00 Watts (55.50 Amps @42V)

PS2 Capacity: 0.00 Watt

PS Configuration : PS1 and PS2 in Redundant Configuration.

Re: 6500 auto reload/restart/reboot

Hi,

I've never heard of a switch reloading without a crash or reason.

Can you configure set test diag complete on the switch for me

Also what does the show logg buff 1024 say?

Does the switch have redundant supervisors? If so, do they both go off?

Is the switch powered through a UPS or some sort, or from mains?

>> I've never heard of a switch reloading without a crash or reason.

The same for me, from this point my problem to understand the source of the issue.

>> Can you configure set test diag complete on the switch for me

It's already configured...

cat6513 (enable) sh test diaglevel

Diagnostic mode at last bootup : complete

Diagnostic mode at next reset : complete

>> Does the switch have redundant supervisors?

No, we have only one supervisor (MSFC2)

>> Is the switch powered through a UPS or some sort, or from mains?

Yes, the switch is powered through an UPS; we have verified that power supply is good, from the same source are powered all server in data center, and only machine that suffer this problem is catalyst 6513...

>> Also what does the show logg buff 1024 say?

From buffered log we can see only last 2 hours events, reboot is happened 2 days ago (during weekend).

Switch log to a syslog server, from it we can view nothing meaningful, in any case:

Re: 6500 auto reload/restart/reboot

Power is one of the reasons for reboots not the only reason. You should be looking into other areas. Slim down the chasis, use minimum number of modules required to meet your business objectives and observ. Which NMS do you use ? What events are being generated before the reboot. Are they consistent ?

I understand fixing random reboot is one of the dauting tasks. Is your IOS upto date ? which version are you using ? Is firmware on all modules upto date ?

Re: 6500 auto reload/restart/reboot

Hi,

I know its been quite a few years since you posted this thread but did you ever figure out the cause of this problem as I experiencing exactly the same on one of my 6500's?

Even the outage time is the same and it has happened quite a few times over the past few weeks.

Please let me know if you found a cause and solution to this auto reboot issue.

Cheers,

Martha.
