6500 Power Allocation to an uninstalled Supervisor

Hi,

I have a 6500 switch that uses a SUP720 in slot 5. If you look at the power, the switch has allocated power to slot 6. Slot 6 is empty, but the switch still marking a section of power capacity as used.

Does anyone know how I can stop the switch allcating power to the unused slot. I need the extra power.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

AFAIK the supervisor slots will reserve 282W on the sup720 for each sup slot, even if only one supervisor is installed.

Official reason is 'Implemented for Hot-swapping cases to ensure you have enough power for it.'

Regardless of which Supervisor you are using, the system will allocate power to the second Supervisor slot in anticipation of a dual-Supervisor configuration.

If you have no plans to ever use a second Supervisor, it is our recommendation that you put the highest power consuming linecard in the second Supervisor slot to get maximum power utilization within the system.

Hi Ankur,

I never thought of that! I suppose you could also add an extra card and power is down.

Thanks,

Dave
