6506 and 4506

Dear Sir,

Existing core switch is 2 x 6506 with the following components:

Mod Port Model

--- ---- ----------------

1 2 WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE

WS-F6K-PFC

2 16 WS-X6416-GBIC

3 48 WS-X6348-RJ-45

15 1 WS-F6K-MSFC

Now they have the budget to replace one of the 6506. I am considering 4506 and 6506. Which one do you think is more appropriate?

The major protocol used by the core switch is HSRP and OSPF. Besides IP, IPX is needed.

Any advise?

Thanks.

Re: 6506 and 4506

Product selection boils down to budget, current requirements and investment protection. Both 4500s and 6500s are high performance switches but 6500 has option for lot of service modules which protects your investment while 4500 is pure ethernet switch. If you go with 4500s, it would make sense to go with 4507R chassis since they support redundant Supervisors.
