Has anyone combined these upgrades? I'm adding a new pair of 6509s with Sup2s to a network all running CatIOS, and with one pair still at Sup1a. I'm concerned that HSRP will fail when I go add a 17th mang VLAN.
I assume you mean the restriction on the hsrp groups. You do not have to have a separate group for each vlan when using hsrp . If you want you can have really as many as you want in a single hsrp group. We have over 70 vlans in the same hsrp group and it works fine . All our vlans are in the same hsrp group which in our case was hsrp group 1 . In your case just make the 17th vlan a member of one of the existing groups 1-16 .
