871 - 24Mb vs 28Mb for AdvSec / AdvIPServices

Hey folks.

I have an 871 with 128Mb of DRAM and 24Mb of Flash. I was running 12.4.9T1 Advanced Security and wanted to test out the 12.4.9T1 Advanced IP Services image. The IOS .bin file for Adv Security is 13.6Mb, and AdvIPServ is about 16Mb.

The requirements for AdvIPServices inidcates that you need 28Mb of Flash, but since the image was only 16Mb, I figured I'd give it a shot. Upon reboot, the router started spitting out really strange garbage characters, and although it seems to go through the boot process it appears that it doesn't like the AdvIPServices image, even though there appears to be plenty (8mb) of flash left over for it. (I did an 'erase flash' beforehand, so the only thing there is the IOS .bin image.)

Any thoughts?

Hi Neil

If possible and if you are in normal router prompt can you issue show version command check the filename with which the router has booted ?

Also are you facing any problem with the new ios ?

This was really strange. Again, the problem was that I was getting garbage characters on my HyperTerminal when I was console'd into the router. I scanned through the Cisco TAC case collection, and found a tip to try setting your HyperTerm to different port speeds, instead of the default 9600. I was finally able to get in when I tried 115200 (same N,8,1, though.)

The boot register was set to 0x3922, but once I rebooted it returned to 0x2102.

It appears that the AdvIPServices IOS image is working fine with only 24Mb of Flash, so I guess my question still remains: Why would the Cisco site say 28Mb of Flash is required when the image is only 16Mb?
