APIPA

I am a student and was just going through network stuffs. I have a doubt about how the devices are connected and  communicate while they are assigned APIPA addresses.

Hello,

the IP address range (169.254.0.1 through 169.254.255.254/16) is used by clients when there is no DHCP server available. The clients assign themselves an IP address in that range in order to be able to communicate. The communication is at layer 2 only, meaning that the range is not routed. The APIPA service checks regularly for the presence of a DHCP server, if it finds one, it replaces the APIPA address with a valid address.
