You can have a look at "show system" command on the 6500's to have a look at the backplane usage and peak usage.. really not sure if u can get that info on the 4500's.. u can try this... See the command reference below:
I think you will also need to consider other things like CPU/memory usage, feature sets requirements, power supply usage, module upgrades etc, to re-size your LAN.. Have some kinda performance analysis on your network and see all the parameters mentioned above...
