Brand new out of box set up on 2960 switch

Ok i got an new switch out of box I'm trying to set up use at my job. I hooked it up to an open port in our IT work room and hooked up a few lap tops. .the issue is that there is no connectivity lights on the port 1.I configured an ip on vlan 1.

What else do I need to do to get this thing going ?

Did I miss something ? Also I thought Cisco switch work right out the box with no configuration necessary

I'm looking for a real world answer. In packet tracer it just start right up after I connect the cables to the PC and router.

Please help thanks

Brand new out of box set up on 2960 switch

hi james,

can you please post the output of the "show running-config" command here so we can have a look at it.

is port 1 the only port without connectivity? i mean are the laptops able to communicate to each other?

but you are sure that something is connected to the other end of the cable in the IT room?

not that it is a patch pannel and the port is actually not patched.

have you tried a different cable, or a different device on port nr.1?

are the laptops able to communicate to each other?

I checked the patch panel and its patched in MDF. I took the cable from the switch and hooked it up to the laptop directly and have conntivity so the cable is good. But when I take that same cable and plug it into the switch port on the front of the switch the orange light comes on and goes right off again.

Re: Brand new out of box set up on 2960 switch

Ok James, you seem to be confident with CLI, let's try to determine if you have cable issues.

1.  If FastEthernet 0/1 is your uplink to the rest of your network, may I request if you can move this connection (temporarily) to Gig 0/2?  If you can, proceed to #2.

2.  Run the following command:

conf t

interface Gig 0/2

media rj

end

3.  Command:  test cable tdr interface Gig 0/2;

4.  Wait for about 5 to 7 seconds;

5.  Command:  sh cable tdr interface Gig 0/2;

6.  Please post the output to #5; and

7.  Run the following command:

conf t

interface Gig 0/2

media AUTO

end

Re: Brand new out of box set up on 2960 switch

witch#

Switch#show cable tdr int gi0/1

% TDR test was never run on Gi0/1

Switch#conf t

Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z.

Switch(config)#int gi0/1

Switch(config-if)#test cable tdr int gi0/1

                   ^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Switch(config-if)#test cable tdr int gi0/1

                   ^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Switch(config-if)#test ?

% Unrecognized command

Switch(config-if)#test?

% Unrecognized command

Switch(config-if)#testend

                   ^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Switch(config-if)#media

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

When I try and run those command I get this errors ?

And just to be clear when you take a switch out of the box it ready to use right ? I should be able to take it hook up a media of type and use it right ?Also does it matter if the port Im using is coming off another switch in the MDF ? Do I have to trunk the port or something ?

James, you're doing this wrong.  Read my instructions again.

I swaped cables with another one and still nothing. I rebooted the switch I didnt save any of the config so its like it was when I took it out the box. I'm going to grab another switch for fun.

a trunk would only be necessary if you configured vlans.

it could matter that the switch is connected to another switch port, if e.g. you creating a loop and STP is enabled, so one of the connecting ports could get disabled.

but if you connect only one port that shoudnt be the case, even if STP is enabled.

what happens if you connect the switch from the MDF to another port on the 2960, like leo said? or what happens if you connect on of your laptops to port 1?

Re: Brand new out of box set up on 2960 switch

The result is the same. When I hook up a lap top to the switch the connect light goes green. But the LT has a 169.ip and no connectivity> there is also no activity on my up link either. Are you saying I need to disable stp ? I thought that all switch ports are on vlan 1 by default ? So if this is a new switch are you saying that I need to enable stp since I'm technically using a vlans ?

Hi,

STP is enabled by default and all ports are member of VLAN 1.

if you get a 169.254.x.x address then it means your machine can't contact a dhcp server.

if the light goes green then your port is ok you should see connected in the output of sh interface

what about your uplink port ? is it green also ? can you provide output of sh interface  for this port.

where is your dhcp server ? there is no config out of the box for such a device as far as I know of.

Regards.

Alain

Re: Brand new out of box set up on 2960 switch

I agree with cadet. It doesn't appear that you have a trunk configured. Is your internal lan on vlan 1? If your dhcp server is on another vlan you are going to need a 'ip helper-address' command. The 2960 is just talking on vlan1 and not any other vlan. I also noticed you don't have a trunk configured. Also, the orange light is going to be on for about 30 seconds since portfast is not configured. But I would guess your problem has to do with VLAN1, an ip-helper-address statement missing, and or a trunk not configured..

so let me get this straight.

if you connect the other switch or one of the laptops to port 1 you dont get a link and the LED stays dark.

if you connect the laptop or the other switch to e.g. port 2 you get a link. is that right?

i dont say disable STP, in fact i recommand to keep STP enabled.

like john and alain mentioned above, the ip problem is propably related to the dhcp server. if that is on a different vlan than the 169. IP makes sense.
