Broadcast packets relative to total packets

Am I reading this correctly? This is a trunk line from an access swith to our distrabution switch. Is the broacast ammount way out of proportion to the total ammount of traffic?

This is the trunk line snap shot on the distrabution side of the trunk line. I cleared counters at the time this snap shot was taken 14 min ago.

30 second input rate 1377000 bits/sec, 882 packets/sec

  30 second output rate 2359000 bits/sec, 1155 packets/sec

709040 packets input, 139804225 bytes, 0 no buffer

     Received 244485 broadcasts (0 multicast)

Hey John,

Yes I'd say the ratio looks high on that link, but there are topologies where that could be expected. You could attach a laptop to a spare port configured in the same way, to collect a packet capture and check if the broadcast traffic indicates a problem or is simply a result of trunking a few busy VLANs.

Cheers,

/Phil
