C6509-E boot failure

Hi,

Last night we tried to upgrade one of our C6509-E switches from IOS version 12.2(18)SXF12a to 12.2(33)SXH7 (Advanced IPServices). This switch has Sup720 (SP) and MSFC3 daughter card (RP). We used Single bin file copy to Sup-bootdisk instead of Modular installation using "Install File" command. After copying the image to bootdisk a boot command line was entered in the Config file as well.

When the switch was reloaded it appears to hang just after booting the SP image; it appears stuck there and just doesn't proceed to boot the RP image.

Any idea how to go about this ? We are considering to use Modular installation medthod tonight, using "Install File" command, instead of single bin file image. What is your advice on that ?

Thanks

Hi,

The install command has been deprecated in the last few versions of the IOS, specifically in the SXI revisions.  The other note that you should be aware of is that Cisco is going away from the modular IOS completely by 2012 and they are encouraging the customers to load new non-modular IOS, if they need to upgrade.

Hello Sankung,

If the SP booted up in 33SXH7 fine, it indicates that boot statement in SP was correct. Once the SP booted up, you should have seen something like "Console ownership changed to Route Processor".. Did you see this ? If so, then RP should be able to extract its part of the code to boot.

If you have any logs, please send it.

If you trying to upgrade the switch from SXF12 to 33SXH7, please do "show boot" and "remote command switch show boot" to verify boot statements in RP and SP respectively. Thanks.

Hi yramdoss

I certainly didn't verify that both SP and RP Boot variables were consistent before reloading from 12.2(18)SXF environment. However, in RomMon I manually set the Boot variable and restarted using the "boot ios-image" command; the system hanged at same point immediately after starting the SP boot image. It successfully downloads the SP boot image (from the new ios) but fails to load from DRAM apparently.

Now, in terms of firmware, is there a minimum for 12.2(33)SXH ?

Thanks.
