Can anybody explain how these two are related? I understand that ASIC allow switches to forward packets at high-speed lookups based in hardware. CAMs have a list of mac to port mappings.

Hi Christopher,

Lets try to say it in simple words, CAM is simply implemented in ASICs, from a CCO document:

ASICs is responsible for the Ethernet MAC layer functions, address or network lookup in the content-addressable memory (CAM) table, and forwarding of the packet with its correct rewrite information to the Fabric Interface.

HTH, please do rate all helpful replies,

Mohammed Mahmoud.

Thank you for replying. Do you have a link to the document?

Chris
