Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

I have a switch that is having some memory issues. I noticed this was caused by not having our Vlans pruned on the switch. The problem is when I prune the Vlans I can not save the config file because of this error "Error on initialize VLAN database 1: VTP feature not yet initialized[OK]."  The problem is I need to reboot the switch after pruning to free up the memory.

Any ideas on what may be causing this error?

VTP status output is attached. This is a C2950 running (C2950-I6K2L2Q4-M), Version 12.1(22)EA13

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

Can you post the full output of show ver, and check your log and post the full detail error message along with any traceback error?

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

You are hitting bug ID CSCdw66805

According from the release note

SSH is a memory-intensive feature, which consequently limits the number of
VLANs, trunk ports, and cluster members that may be configured on the
Catalyst 2950 according to the following restrictions:

*The multiplicative product of the number of trunk ports and VLANs must be
less than or equal to 128 [i.e. (# of trunks)*(# of VLANs) must be less
than or equal to 128].  Thus, if there are 2 trunks on the switch, up to 64
VLANs can be configured (2*64=128).

*If your  Catalyst 2950 switch is also configured as a cluster commander
switch, the cryptographic image can only support up to 8 cluster members in
the cluster.

There is no limitation on the use of other features.

If a switch, which has previously saved configurations exceeding the above
restrictions, is loaded with the 2950 Cryptographic software,
unpredictable behavior, such as continuous reloads, may occur when
system memory is completely running out.

If the following message is observed with the Cryptographic software:

%SYS-2-MALLOCFAIL: Memory allocation of (number_of_bytes) bytes failed ...

It is possible that the configurations already exceed the restrictions.
Please check the configurations to make sure the above restrictions
are not exceeded.

You are hitting hardware limitation.

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

Yes, but I can not put the fix in place because I can not write the config to the memory because of the mention error.

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

That could be because of low memory. Try to set VTP in Transparent Mode
and start eliminating all unnecessary vlans.

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

I am experiencing this issue on a few other switches. I have contacted TAC and they keep telling me to prune down my switch. The problem is I have pruned the switch down for a few vlans and I still get this error when I go to write the memory. I have limited the Vlans on the trunk port as well as removed the vlans with no spanning-tree vlan.

I still see a large number of VLans when I do show vlan, and VTP is showing 129 existing Vlans.

Any ideas? Should I edit the vlan data base file?

Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

i found same problem but it's occur in ME-C3750-24TE with ios 12.2(44)SE2. sho run is normally but sho star not vlan configuration.

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

Hi,

the error and tracebacks that you are seeing may be realted to this bug

CSCso85354     %PLATFORM_UCAST-3-LB: PI<->PD traceback, trigger unknown

this particular one is fixed from 12.2(46)SE.

Anyway the best would be to move to newer IOS release and monitor it then.

I do nor see how is this related to this vlan issue in this tread?

cheers

Re: Can not write memory getting error VLAN database 1:

Building configuration...

Error on initialize VLAN database 1: VTP feature not yet initialized[OK]

The config is being saved.

However, if you do not trust that, you can capture the show running-config to notepad and power cycle (during maintenance or after-hours). Compare the running-config you saved to notepad with that of the switch after reboot and add whatever was missed.
