This is a newb question I know .. but when I do a #sh vlan id *** it shows me the ports in that VLAN right? But then I'll do a #sh vlan id ??? and the same ports will show up in that vlan as well .. is that because they're in trunk mode?

Hello Brent,
you're right trunk ports will appear in the ouput of all vlans that are in forwarding state on each of them
